The Mission of the NWIL NYI Family Resourcing Initiative

To help build the partnership between churches and parents to maximize the spiritual influence on teens

4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Why Family-Based Ministry?

In biblical days, the people of Israel understood their roles as parents and family members. They knew their most important calling was to “impress upon their children” the Word of God. They were to talk about it and live out their faith daily. Each child knew his or her place in the family and in their faith. (Deut. 6:4-9)

While the world around us is very different, the role of parents and family members has remained consistent. A recent Barna study asked teens who had “a lot of influence” over their lives. Parents topped the list at 78%, while pastors came in at 27%.

That shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, parents average around 3,000 contact hours with their children in a year to a youth pastor’s 40 hours. And yet in most churches, the spiritual training and molding of teens is placed almost exclusively in the hands of the youth department.

Wouldn’t it make more sense if we put our greatest emphasis and effort into empowering the most effective tool we have in youth ministry—
the family?
